JERSEY LAVENDER

Continuing on the B58, go straight over the next crossroads for the A12. Turn left here and right at the roundabout which bypasses the airport and brings you into St Brelade. Just after the Quennevais shopping precinct turn left along the B25, signposted to Jersey Lavender 6 [map] (www.jerseylavender.co.uk; Apr–Oct Tue–Sun 10am–5pm; charge). The fields of lavender, covering 9 acres (4 hectares), provide a Provence-like blaze of purple throughout the summer. This is a family-owned and run business that was set up in the 1980s.

The best time to visit is early June to late July/early August – the lavandage or lavender harvest is usually over by mid-August, but visitors can still watch the distilling and bottling processes and purchase oils, lotions and other products made from the lavender essence. Further attractions are the herb garden and woodland walk. In the summer season talks are given on the distillation at 11.30am and 3pm. In Sprigs Café next to the shop, lavender finds its way into a number of sweet and savoury dishes – for more information, click here.
